The Equator
Like a belt wrapped around Earth's widest waistline, it is the baseline that splits the planet into equal northern and southern halves.

The Largest Circle Around Earth's Waist
Picture stretching a rubber band snugly around the exact middle of a ball. Sitting halfway between the top and bottom poles, this midline is the equator. Imagine slicing Earth cleanly in two right through its center—the equator is the perimeter where that slice meets the surface.
Of course, there is no visible line painted across the continents and oceans. It is an imaginary baseline established to map the globe and navigate accurately. Airplanes and ships rely on it to chart their courses.
With this line as the boundary, the upper half of Earth is the Northern Hemisphere, and the lower half is the Southern Hemisphere. On maps, we measure distance north or south using latitude, and the equator serves as the starting point: 0 degrees latitude.
Why Is the Equator Hot All Year Round?
Shine a flashlight straight at a wall in a dark room, and the beam concentrates tightly into a bright, intense circle. Tilt the flashlight at an angle, however, and the beam spreads out across a larger area, becoming dimmer.
The exact same thing happens with sunlight hitting Earth. Near the equator, sunlight strikes the surface almost vertically from overhead year-round, concentrating enormous heat energy into a compact area. In contrast, the polar regions receive sunlight at a shallow, slanted angle, scattering the warmth.
Because of this direct sunlight, equatorial regions do not experience the traditional four seasons of spring, summer, fall, and winter. Warm weather persists all year, and the intense heat causes warm air to rise rapidly, triggering heavy tropical downpours called squalls that nourish lush rainforests.
A Closer Look: Earth's Widest Bulge
Earth is not a perfect sphere. Because the planet spins rapidly on its axis once a day, centrifugal force pushes the middle outward, creating a slight equatorial bulge.
This makes the equator the point with Earth's longest circumference. It stretches about 40,075 kilometers (24,901 miles), and the distance from Earth's center to the surface is about 21 kilometers (13 miles) farther at the equator than at the poles. Earth is technically an oblate spheroid.
At the equator, day and night are also split equally into roughly 12 hours each, every single day of the year. Because this region moves fastest as Earth rotates, space agencies build launch sites as close to the equator as possible to give rockets an extra velocity boost from the planet's spin.

Every location along the equator is swelteringly hot all year.
High-altitude areas near the equator can be pleasantly cool or even freezing. For example, Quito, the capital of Ecuador situated right near the equator, enjoys spring-like weather year-round, and snow covers the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
