Why Did Earth Need a Vertical Starting Line?
If you look at a globe, you will see a grid of horizontal lines (latitude) and vertical lines (longitude). The Equator, which marks horizontal zero, sits right in the middle of Earth's rotational axis, making it a natural starting line that everyone could easily agree on.
Vertical lines were a different story. Since Earth is a rotating sphere, every vertical line looks practically identical, meaning there is no natural starting point. In the past, countries drew their own maps using their own capitals or national observatories as longitude 0 degrees.
France used Paris, while Britain used London, creating major confusion for sailors navigating the open seas. As railroads expanded and the world grew interconnected, humanity urgently needed a single, shared starting line for vertical coordinates.
Why the Royal Observatory at Greenwich Won
In 1884, delegates from 25 nations gathered in Washington, D.C., for the International Meridian Conference. After fierce debate, they officially chose the meridian passing through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, as the Prime Meridian of the world.
A decisive factor was Britain's global leadership in maritime trade, navigation, and nautical charts. A vast majority of the world's sailors were already relying on British maps, making Greenwich the most practical and convenient choice.
Establishing the Prime Meridian also unified global timekeeping. Because Earth completes one full rotation (360 degrees) every 24 hours, each 15-degree shift in longitude equals a one-hour difference. By setting Greenwich as the baseline, moving east adds time and moving west subtracts time, completing our modern global standard time system.
A Closer, More Precise Look
To be even more precise, the modern 0-degree longitude shown on your smartphone's GPS does not perfectly line up with the historic brass line on the ground at Greenwich. The true GPS 0 degrees passes about 102 meters (335 feet) east of that line.
In the 19th century, astronomers marked lines by looking up at stars aligned with local gravity. Today, satellites and laser measurements recalculate coordinates based on Earth's true center of mass.
This modern standard is called the IERS Reference Meridian. Although satellite technology has made the measurement far more precise, its fundamental role as humanity's shared starting line remains exactly the same as in the days of Greenwich.
