Why a Stone Thrown into Space Never Stops
A message in a bottle cast out to sea drifts endlessly on the waves. Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 does something very similar. In the vacuum of space, there is no air to create friction or drag. Once an object reaches cruising speed, it can glide forever thanks to the law of inertia, without burning extra fuel.
Yet the initial thrust from launch wasn't nearly enough to reach deep space. Scientists came up with an ingenious shortcut: stealing orbital energy from giant planets to boost the spacecraft's speed. By flying closely behind a planet along its orbit, the probe slingshots forward using the planet's gravitational pull.
This maneuver is called a 'gravity assist.' It works like throwing a ball against the front of a speeding trainโthe ball bounces off with its own speed plus the train's speed, rocketing away much faster. Voyager 1 used Jupiter and Saturn as stepping stones, accelerating to become one of the fastest objects in human history as it raced out of our solar system.
Crossing the Sun's Fence into Interstellar Space
The Sun doesn't just radiate light like a giant lamp. It continuously blasts out invisible charged particles known as the solar wind, inflating a vast, bubble-like shield around our solar system called the 'heliosphere.'
After cruising for decades, Voyager 1 punched through the outer boundary of this bubble in 2012. Solar particles faded away, replaced by cosmic rays from distant stars. For the first time in history, a human creation crossed into the true cosmic void: interstellar space.
Out here, sunlight barely reaches, making it pitch-black and bitterly cold. Powered by a small radioisotope thermoelectric generator, Voyager 1 continues to transmit data on magnetic fields and plasma back to Earth, currently over 15 billion miles (24 billion km) away.
To Be Precise: It Hasn't Completely Left the Solar System
Many people assume that because Voyager 1 left the heliosphere, it has completely departed the solar system. To be precise, while it did cross beyond the solar wind's realm into interstellar space, it has not yet passed through the Oort Cloudโthe ultimate outer boundary of our solar system.
The Oort Cloud is a colossal spherical shell of icy debris and comets bound by the Sun's gravity. Even though sunlight and solar wind barely reach there, the Sun's gravitational grip still holds sway.
It will take Voyager 1 about 300 years just to reach the inner edge of the Oort Cloud, and an estimated 30,000 years to fully pass through it. Even after its nuclear power finally runs out in a few years, the probe will drift forever across the Milky Way, carrying the 'Golden Record'โhumanity's time capsule message to any extraterrestrial civilization that might one day find it.
