Definition An ocean planet is an exoplanet whose entire surface is submerged under deep oceans with no exposed land. While Earth's oceans are like a thin droplet on its surface, an ocean planet holds a massive portion of its total mass in water, reaching depths of tens to hundreds of kilometers.
A Massive World of Water with Nowhere to Stand
Imagine erasing every continent from a globe and painting the entire sphere blue. On an ocean planet, no matter which direction you look, there is only an endless horizon with not a single island in sight.
Earth's oceans average about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) deep, acting like a thin apple skin compared to the size of the planet. By contrast, an ocean planet plunges tens to hundreds of kilometers deep. While water makes up a tiny 0.02% of Earth's total mass, an ocean planet is composed of 10% to over 50% water by weight.
These worlds typically form in the frigid outer reaches of a planetary system as icy bodies, then slowly migrate inward toward their host star, melting that vast ice. From space, they look like pristine, radiant blue marbles, but beneath the surface lies an environment utterly unlike Earth.

To be more precise, diving to the ocean floor won't reveal familiar sand or rocky seabed. The weight of water stacked hundreds of kilometers high generates crushing pressures tens of thousands of times greater than the deepest trench on Earth.
Under this unfathomable pressure, water molecules are forced into an exotic crystal structure known as high-pressure ice. This is completely different from the regular ice in your freezer. Even when temperatures rise to hundreds of degrees, the immense pressure prevents it from melting, keeping it trapped as a solid.
As a result, an ocean planet's cross section features a liquid ocean on top, wrapped around a gigantic mantle of scorching-hot ice, with a rocky core buried far below. Liquid water and bedrock remain completely cut off from each other.
Why a Water World Might Be Hostile to Life
With water everywhere, an ocean world might sound like an idyllic paradise for alien life. However, scientists point out that it could actually be a surprisingly barren wasteland.
Life on Earth thrived by feeding on minerals and nutrients belched from rocky seafloor hydrothermal vents. On an ocean planet, the thick barrier of high-pressure ice seals off the rocky core completely. Without direct contact with rock, essential minerals never dissolve into the water, leaving a nutrient-starved aquatic desert.
On top of that, without exposed land and rain to weather rocks and regulate atmospheric carbon, the climate lacks a natural thermostat. This leaves the planet vulnerable to runaway greenhouse effects or sudden deep freezes. Beneath its peaceful blue surface, an ocean planet can be remarkably hostile to life.
