The difference comes down to what your body jots down. While fighting measles, your body studies the invader's features and leaves behind a record, much like sketching a mugshot in a notebook. When that same culprit invades again, your defenses waste no time figuring out who it is.
Colds, however, are caused by a huge cast of suspects. Over two hundred different viruses cause cold symptoms, meaning last year's visitor and this year's guest are completely different bugs. Your body has to start sizing them up from scratch each time. It is not that your notebook failed; it is that a brand-new, unlisted guest walked in. Built-in Shields vs. Learned Defenses
Your body relies on a two-layer defense. The first layer is something you are born with. This is also why everyday phrases like 'boosting your immune system' can be misleading. Immunity is a vast, interconnected network of barriers and cells, not a single dial you can just turn up. Because there is no single gauge, you cannot simply label it 'strong' or 'weak'.
Looking a Little Closer
Surviving measles doesn't give you a generally superhuman body. What remains are memory cells tuned specifically to that one virus's markers. That is why weathering measles won't make your colds or other illnesses any milder.
These records accumulate one invader at a time, and they can fade over time. Some notes last a lifetime, while others wash out relatively fast. How well a record protects you also varies by disease. While measles grants near-lifelong protection after a single bout, other illnesses can strike again even if a record exists. It helps to distinguish between the individual and the crowd. Immunity refers to the state of one person's body, while herd immunity occurs when enough people are immune that an infection can no longer easily spread through the community.
