The ant could slip through that hole and pop out on the other side in no time. That image of a worm boring through fruit is where the term wormhole comes from.
Our universe isn't a rigid box. Instead, spacetime acts like a flexible fabric that bends and stretches under heavy mass. If two distant regions of space bend sharply toward each other, they can end up close togetherโjust like the opposite edges of a folded sheet of paper.
Punching a tunnel between those folded points creates a cosmic shortcut. Rather than flying through normal space faster than light, you bend space itself to drastically shrink the travel distance.
A Solution Hidden in Einstein's Equations
Wormholes are not just a gimmick invented by sci-fi filmmakers. They are genuine mathematical solutions that emerge directly from Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity. In the 1930s, Einstein and physicist Nathan Rosen published this concept together, which is why scientists formally call it an Einstein-Rosen bridge.
Any object with mass warps the spacetime around it. A black hole, packed with extreme mass, warps spacetime so severely that it creates a deep funnel with seemingly no bottom.
If the bottom of this funnel connects to another point in space, a tunnel is born. Unlike a black hole, which crushes everything that falls in, a traversable wormhole is imagined as a passage you can safely enter and exit on the other side.
Why Can't We Travel Through One Yet?
Just because equations allow for a cosmic tunnel does not mean we can hop into one today. In theory, a wormhole is extremely unstable; its intense gravity would cause it to snap shut in the blink of an eye.
For a spacecraft to pass through safely, something must prop the tunnel open by pushing outward against gravity. Physicists explain that this requires exotic matter with negative energy, which exerts a repulsive gravitational force.
