Why Do Colors Wash Out When Viewed from an Angle?

A smartphone or monitor screen is built like a precision sandwich, stacking thin glass sheets and optical filters over a backlight. When you look straight on, light travels directly to your eyes, delivering crisp and accurate colors.
However, when you shift to the side, light must travel through multiple layers of glass and polarizing filters at an angle. During this journey, light bends and scatters unevenly, distorting the balance of primary colors before they reach your eyes.
As a result, deep blacks turn into washed-out grays, and vibrant reds fade into dull oranges. If you share a video on your phone with a friend sitting next to you and they complain that the picture looks washed out, that is due to the physical limits of the viewing angle.

Panel Types Make a Massive Difference
In liquid crystal displays (LCDs), viewing performance varies drastically depending on how the liquid crystal molecules physically move to block or let light through. Meanwhile, OLED displays have self-lit pixels without liquid crystal or filter layers, offering vibrant, distortion-free images from virtually any angle.
This makes wide-angle panels like IPS or OLED far better suited for living room TVs where family members sit scattered around, or for creative work where teams review designs together.
The Truth Behind the 178-Degree Spec
When browsing monitor specs, you will frequently spot '178-degree viewing angle.' Since a completely flat line is 180 degrees, 178 degrees sounds as if you can view the screen practically parallel to the bezel without issue. However, this number does not guarantee picture quality identical to the center.
Display manufacturers typically measure viewing angles based on the point where the contrast ratio (the ratio between the brightest white and darkest black) drops to a bare minimum of 10:1. In other words, as long as text and silhouettes remain barely recognizable, the panel passes the test—even if colors shift wildly or brightness drops in half.
That is why two monitors both rated at '178 degrees' can perform night and day in real life. A quality panel might look pristine at 45 degrees, while a cheap one gets milky and unreadable at just 30 degrees.
When buying a new monitor or laptop, do not rely on the spec sheet number alone. It pays to check the underlying panel technology and hands-on reviews before making a choice.
