What happens when two plates crash into each other? When a dense, heavy oceanic plate meets a lighter continental plate, it dives deep into the hot earth beneath it. Geologists call this process subduction.
As the sinking plate gets dragged into the mantle, immense friction and pressure generate scorching heat, melting rock into pockets of magma. When this liquid rock forces its way up through cracks to the surface, a volcano erupts.
Meanwhile, the colliding plates lock against each other, building up massive strain underground. When the rock reaches its breaking point and suddenly snaps, the shock waves trigger violent earthquakes and tsunamis. This constant subduction is why places like Japan and Chile experience frequent tremors.
A Closer Look: It Doesn't Fall Like Dominoes
The Ring of Fire is not a single trigger wired to explode all at once. Instead, it is a 25,000-mile (40,000 km) horseshoe-shaped belt stretching from New Zealand through Japan and Alaska, and all the way down the Andes in South America.
Because of its name, people often assume that an earthquake in one spot triggers a worldwide chain reaction. In reality, each segment along the boundary releases built-up strain at its own pace. Distant volcanoes erupt independently on their own cycles.
