Definition A rainbow is an optical phenomenon that occurs when sunlight enters airborne water droplets, bends, reflects off the inner surface, and bends again as it exits, splitting into distinct bands of color. The colors hidden inside seemingly white sunlight—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet—fan out toward our eyes because each color bends at a slightly different angle.

A Light Beam's Three-Step Journey Inside a Droplet

Spraying a garden hose into the air on a sunny day creates a miniature rainbow. The giant rainbow spanning the sky works the exact same way. The stars of the show are millions of tiny raindrops lingering in the air after the rain. Each droplet acts like a tiny, flawless glass marble.

The first transformation happens as sunlight enters the droplet. Passing from air into denser water slows the light down and bends its path—a process called refraction. At this moment, the white sunlight begins to split because each color bends at a slightly different angle.

Next, the light travels through the droplet, hits the back wall, and bounces forward. This second step is reflection, working just like a curved mirror. Finally, as the light exits back out into the air, it bends once more, spreading the colors even wider before reaching our eyes.

Why Is Red Always on the Outside?

If you look closely at a rainbow, red is always on the outer edge and violet is on the inside. This fixed order comes down to the different wavelengths of light. A wavelength is simply the distance over which a light wave ripples.

Red light has a longer wavelength, so it bends relatively gently when passing through a droplet. In contrast, violet light has a shorter wavelength and bends much more sharply. This separation of colors caused by different bending angles is called light dispersion.

Inside a single droplet, violet light bends downward at a steeper angle. However, raindrops sit at various heights in the sky. From higher droplets, only the less-bent red rays travel directly into your eyes. From lower droplets, the sharply bent violet rays reach your eyes instead. That is why you see red originating from droplets higher up and violet from droplets lower down.

To Be Exact: Rainbows Are Actually Full Circles

Standing on the ground, we only see rainbows as semicircular arches because the horizon and the ground block the bottom half. If you look down from an airplane window or a high mountain peak, you can actually see a complete circular rainbow. A rainbow is really a cone of light radiating outward at roughly 42 degrees around an imaginary line connecting your eyes to the sun.

Sometimes you might spot a fainter rainbow hovering just above the main one—a 'double rainbow.' This outer, dimmer band is called a secondary rainbow. It forms when light reflects inside each raindrop twice instead of once before exiting.

Because light loses intensity with every internal bounce, secondary rainbows appear much fainter. In addition, just like seeing an image reflected twice in mirrors, the color order is reversed: violet is on the outside, and red is on the inside.
