How does your number stay the same when switching carriers?
The secret behind number portability is a shared master registry known as a centralized routing database operated between carriers.
In the past, networks routed incoming calls directly to the carrier tied to a number's prefix. Today, the network queries this central database in real time whenever a call is placed, instantly checking which carrier network currently hosts the recipient's phone.
When you request a port-in with a new carrier, your old plan is automatically terminated and your record in the central database is updated. Whenever someone dials your number, network switches look up the database and route the call seamlessly to your new provider.
How is it different from upgrading a device or opening a new line?
When buying a phone, terminology can be confusing. Opening a 'new line' creates an entirely fresh account with a new number. A 'device upgrade' means buying a new phone while staying with the same carrier on the same number.
In contrast, number portabilityโoften called portingโmeans switching your contract to a new carrier while taking your current phone number with you. You can bring your own device (BYOD) or purchase a new phone during the switch. The key distinction is that your number remains identical while your carrier changes.
Keep in mind that porting automatically ends your contract with your previous provider. Any remaining phone installment balances or early termination fees will be billed on your final statement, and carrier loyalty rewards or tenure discounts will expire upon leaving.
