To be more precise, lens flare is a complex physical phenomenon caused by differences in refractive index, light wavelengths, and the internal structure of the camera. Whenever light transitions between air and glass, about 4% naturally reflects back. A high-end lens made of 10 glass elements has 20 air-glass surfaces. In cinema and video games, however, creators embraced this imperfection as a stylistic tool to enhance realism and mood. It subconsciously tells the audience that they are watching the scene through a real camera lens.

In 3D graphics and gaming, developers use shadersโ€”programs that calculate lighting and colorโ€”to simulate lens flare mathematically. The computer tracks virtual light sources and renders ghost rings and light streaks across the screen in real time. Sci-fi and action filmmakers often rely heavily on digitally generated artificial flare to make scenes feel dramatic and dynamic.
