Definition La Niña is a climate pattern where sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific drop more than 0.5°C (0.9°F) below average for several consecutive months. It occurs when easterly trade winds blow unusually hard, dragging warm surface water away and causing frigid deep-sea water to surge upward.

Why Does the Eastern Pacific Get So Cold?

If you blow hard across a hot cup of cocoa, the warm liquid on top pushes to the far side, and cooler liquid from below rises to fill the space. The exact same thing happens across the Pacific Ocean. Constant winds called 'trade winds' always blow from east to west along the equator.

Normally, these winds steadily move warm surface water toward Southeast Asia. During La Niña, however, they blow with extraordinary force. Warm water gets swept violently westward, and freezing deep-sea water rushes up from the ocean floor to take its place in the east. This rising of deep, cold water is called upwelling.

As this icy water covers the ocean surface, sea temperatures off the coast of South America plunge. A drop in sea surface temperature of just 0.5°C to 2°C (1°F to 4°F) is enough to trigger a massive chain reaction across global weather patterns.

Floods on One Side, Severe Drought on the Other

When ocean temperatures shift, the air above them changes completely. In the western Pacific—around Indonesia, the Philippines, and Australia—warm water piles up deep, making the sea exceptionally hot. This heated ocean warms the air above and pushes it upward, building massive thunderclouds. As a result, these areas experience historic torrential rains, floods, and frequent typhoons.

Meanwhile, the eastern Pacific (coastal South America) and the southern United States face the exact opposite. Because the chilled ocean cools the air, atmospheric currents sink rather than rise, preventing clouds from forming. Rain disappears for months, leading to crippling droughts and sparking destructive wildfires across parched land.

Because the ocean and atmosphere are deeply intertwined, a temperature swing in the middle of the Pacific creates a global domino effect that alters weather across the planet.

A Closer Look: La Niña vs. El Niño and Global Temperatures

Technically, La Niña means 'the girl' in Spanish and is the direct opposite of El Niño ('the boy'). While El Niño happens when trade winds weaken and the eastern Pacific warms up, La Niña occurs when trade winds become supercharged, cooling the eastern Pacific far below normal.

If El Niño acts like a massive radiator pumping heat into the atmosphere, La Niña acts as a natural cooling system that temporarily slows global temperature rise as cold deep waters absorb heat. For this reason, years dominated by La Niña often show a temporary plateau in the rise of average global temperatures.

However, this does not mean global warming has stopped. Immense heat continues to build in the deeper layers of the ocean. In addition, mid-latitude regions like North America and East Asia often suffer from displaced polar air, enduring severe winter cold snaps and heavy blizzards.
