Definition A Jovian planet (or giant planet) is a massive planet wrapped in thick layers of light gases like hydrogen and helium or icy compounds, lacking a solid rocky surface to stand on. In our outer Solar System, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune belong to this group, boasting enormous sizes, numerous moons, and ring systems.

A Massive World with No Ground to Stand On

Unlike Earth, which is made of solid rock and soil, a Jovian planet is more like an enormous bubble of gas. If a spacecraft tried to land on one, it would never hit solid ground; instead, it would sink endlessly into thick, swirling clouds. That's because there is no solid rocky surface beneath your feet.

When our Solar System first formed, water and gases froze into massive icy clumps in the cold regions far from the Sun. As their strong gravity pulled in enormous amounts of surrounding hydrogen and helium gas, they grew into cosmic giants.

As a result, Jovian planets have radii 4 to 11 times larger than Earth and are overwhelmingly massive. Thanks to their powerful gravity, they command dozens of orbiting moons and feature stunning rings made of ice and dust.

What Happens Deep Inside the Clouds?

Just because they are made of gas doesn't mean they are airy or hollow. As a probe descends deeper into Jupiter's atmosphere, the weight of the gas above creates unimaginable heat and pressure.

Deep down, the extreme pressure compresses hydrogen gas into a sloshing ocean of liquid hydrogen. Plunging even deeper, the electrons in hydrogen atoms break free to conduct electricity, forming a layer of liquid metallic hydrogen.

At the very core lies a dense nucleus several times the size of Earth. While composed of rock, metal, and ice, this core is crushed under millions of atmospheres of pressure and temperatures soaring into tens of thousands of degrees—far different from the rocks on Earth.

To Be Precise: Gas Giants vs. Ice Giants

In the past, all four outer planets were grouped together as Jovian planets, but modern astronomy divides them into two categories based on their composition.

Jupiter and Saturn consist mostly of hydrogen and helium, so they are called 'gas giants.' In contrast, Uranus and Neptune have lower proportions of hydrogen and helium; they formed mainly from frozen water, ammonia, and methane. For this reason, these two are classified separately as ice giants.

Even though their atmospheric bands and colors look distinct, both types lack a solid surface and boast massive atmospheres and ring systems, making them entirely different worlds from Earth.
