Definition Condensation is the physical process where invisible water vapor in the air cools down upon touching a cold surface and turns into liquid water droplets. It occurs most often when there is high humidity and a sharp temperature difference between warm indoor air and cold outdoor air.
Why Do Water Droplets Only Form on Cold Surfaces?
When you leave a glass filled with ice on the table on a hot summer day, water droplets soon bead up on the outside. This is not because the glass is leaking through tiny cracks. It happens because invisible water vapor floating in the air meets the cold glass surface and turns into liquid.
Air can only hold a certain amount of moisture depending on its temperature. Warm air acts like a sponge that can hold plenty of moisture, while cold air can only hold a small amount.
When warm, humid air touches a cold window or wall, its temperature drops instantly. At this moment, the air can no longer hold all that moisture and squeezes out the excess water vapor as liquid dropletsโthis is condensation.

During the winter, home heating keeps the indoors warm, while daily activities like taking hot showers, cooking, and drying laundry release a lot of moisture into the air. Meanwhile, windows and exterior wall corners become freezing cold from the winter chill outside.
When warm, moist indoor air bumps against these chilly walls, water droplets constantly form. The boundary temperature at which water vapor begins to condense into liquid is scientifically known as the dew point.
If left unmanaged, condensation soaks into wallpaper, drywall, and insulation. Damp walls create the perfect breeding ground for toxic mold, staining walls black and releasing airborne spores that can cause respiratory issues and skin allergies.
Smart Ways to Prevent and Fix Condensation
Condensation does not happen solely because the weather is cold; it requires both a temperature difference and high indoor humidity. Therefore, the most effective ways to stop condensation are controlling humidity and ensuring good airflow.
The easiest habit is ventilating by opening windows wide for at least 10 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day to flush trapped moisture outside. Outdoor winter air is very dry, so even a short airing-out can dramatically lower indoor humidity.
In addition, placing furniture right against exterior walls blocks air circulation and worsens condensation, so keep a gap of at least 4 inches (10 cm) between furniture and outer walls. During building construction or remodeling, installing continuous insulation without thermal bridges is essential to keep wall surface temperatures warm.
