Dark Matter
Like an invisible person rearranging furniture in a room, it is the universe's invisible scaffolding—completely unseen, yet holding entire galaxies together with immense gravity.
Definition Dark matter is an unidentified form of matter that does not emit, absorb, or reflect light, making it completely invisible to all telescopes. However, because it carries mass, it reveals its presence through its powerful gravitational pull. It makes up roughly five times more of the cosmos than all visible stars, planets, and gas combined.
Galaxies Are Spinning Too Fast
If a merry-go-round spins too fast, you feel like you are about to be thrown off. Galaxies face the exact same challenge. Hundreds of billions of stars revolve together in giant cosmic disks.
Because most visible matter is packed near the galactic center, stars farther out should rotate much slower—just as distant planets in our solar system orbit the Sun far more slowly than Earth does. But when astronomers measured the speeds of stars at the outer edges of galaxies, they found something shocking: outer stars were whipping around just as fast as stars near the core.
At these breakneck speeds, outer stars should be flung into deep space, tearing the galaxy apart. Yet galaxies remain stable and intact. This proves that aside from visible stars and gas, something invisible is holding the stars together with tremendous gravitational pull.
How Do We Detect Something Invisible?
A clear glass marble is hard to see on its own, but if you place it over a book, the distorted letters reveal that the marble is there. Astronomers map dark matter in a very similar way.
According to Einstein's general theory of relativity, massive objects bend the surrounding fabric of spacetime. When light from a distant background source passes nearby, its path curves as if passing through a giant magnifying glass—an effect called gravitational lensing.
Astronomers often observe patches of seemingly empty space where light from distant galaxies is warped into glowing rings or arcs. This dramatic bending is direct evidence that a massive clump of unseen mass—dark matter—is sitting right in between.
A Closer Look: What Exactly Is It?
The 'dark' in dark matter does not mean pitch black; it simply means 'unknown.' Because it never interacts with light, calling it completely transparent is much more accurate.
Physicists suspect dark matter consists of an undiscovered fundamental particle that interacts only through gravity and perhaps the weak force, completely ignoring electromagnetism. Because it does not interact with ordinary matter, countless dark matter particles pass right through Earth and our bodies every second without touching anything.
When we look at the cosmic recipe of the universe, normal matter that we can see and touch makes up only about 5%. Dark matter accounts for around 27%, and dark energy—the force accelerating cosmic expansion—makes up the remaining 68%. Most of our cosmos is made of components we have yet to truly understand.
