Elevation (Height Above Sea Level)
Just like measuring a skyscraper from the ground floor up, elevation is the universal baseline that uses the ocean surface to measure every height on Earth.
Definition Elevation (height above sea level) measures how high a specific point rises from a universal zero baseline: the average level of the ocean. It provides a standardized measuring stick to fairly compare heights anywhere across Earth's uneven surface.
Why Use the Ocean Instead of the Ground Beneath Our Feet?
If you try comparing heights with friends while some stand on stairs and others on the floor, the comparison will never be fair. Everyone has to stand on the exact same flat surface before you can tell who is truly taller.
The same rule applies to landforms. The ground varies widely in elevation from place to place, so using the dirt beneath your feet makes it impossible to compare locations accurately. For example, a 5-story building sitting on a high plateau can actually reach higher into the sky than a 10-story skyscraper built down on a beach.
That is why scientists turned to the global ocean. Because gravity pulls water to the lowest points where it naturally levels out, Earth's oceans act as one massive, shared floor. By agreeing to treat this sea surface as zero meters (or zero feet), we can finally measure every mountain and city on the planet using the exact same ruler.
Finding Zero in a Constantly Shifting Ocean
However, seawater never stays still. Wind stirs up waves, and the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun causes tides to rise and fall twice a day, constantly changing the water level.
Because of this movement, a single snapshot of the ocean cannot serve as a reliable baseline. Instead, scientists install tide gauges to record water levels continuously over yearsโor even decadesโand calculate the mathematical average. This result is known as Mean Sea Level (MSL).
Since surveyors cannot travel to the seashore every time they need to measure land, countries establish permanent survey reference markers on solid ground called vertical datums. For instance, South Korea calculated the average sea level off the coast of Incheon and built its national vertical datum benchmark on the Inha University campus, using it as the reference starting point to survey elevations nationwide.
A Closer Look: Earth Isn't a Perfect Sphere
To be even more precise, Earth is not a perfect sphere, which means the ocean surface is not a perfectly smooth ball either. Differences in rock density within the planet cause slight gravitational variations, and Earth's rotation creates centrifugal force, resulting in subtle, invisible bumps and dips across the sea surface.
Geophysicists call this gravitationally balanced, idealized sea surface the Geoid. Modern satellite GPS and precision cartography use this geoid model to calculate elevation with millimeter-level accuracy.
It is also helpful to distinguish elevation from the actual height of a mountain's slope. If a mountain has an elevation of 1,000 meters (about 3,280 feet), it does not mean you must hike 1,000 vertical meters from base to peak. If the mountain sits atop an 800-meter plateau, the actual climb from its base is only 200 meters.
